Khoa Do

Khoa Do  is an Associate Professor in the Department of Architecture and Interior Architecture and the Department of Construction Management at Curtin University. He is a trained Australian Architect with over a decade and a half in academia and architectural practice combined. Khoa brings together the best of his discipline knowledge to his scholarship of education design. He has practiced with an international award winning multidisciplinary design firm HASSELL where he occupied a pioneering role of academic in resident as a creative thinker and innovator for HASSELL. On his return to Curtin in 2014 Khoa was appointed the Director of International and Alumni Engagement for the School of Built Environment and at the start of 2015 Khoa was appointed as the Director of Teaching & Learning for the School of Built Environment at Curtin University. Khoa has received prestigious design and teaching awards in recognition of his significant contribution and leadership in architectural education, notably in 2010 he was awarded an Australian National Teaching Award by the Australian Office of Teaching and Learning (OLT).

Khoa is a design thinker who pioneers new knowledge and promotes scholarship beyond the classroom by embracing the border-less education paradigm, harnessing disruptive technologies, be culturally engaged and connecting the digital and analogue platforms. He seeks more learning collaboration with other colleagues from around the world to share expertise and together build an enriching and meaningful interdisciplinary practices. Khoa in 2015 was inducted as a Fellow of the Curtin University which recognises the most outstanding educators for their exceptional pedagogical expertise. He is the co-founder and director of the Global . Design . Studio Program (GDS Program - www.g-d-s.com.au).

Large lecture theatres with tiered seating and iconic buildings are one of the cornerstones of University campuses. However they sometimes represent a waste of space. Especially as a growing number of teaching staff and students are increasingly favouring blending and online learning. This session will explore how to embed flexibility into campus spaces to enable multifunctionality and cost effectiveness.

  • Identifying areas of wasted space within University campus and embedding flexibility
  • Creating a roadmap for flexibility and a multiple purpose campus to optimize space utilization
  • Strategies to retrofit and fit-out to optimize space activation
